Wildlife Habitat on Campus

Hospice House will be creating a wildlife habitat, which will be certified through the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and National Wildlife Federation.  Wildlife habitats provide four essential elements:  food, water, shelter and places to raise young.  These can be natural (such as a stream) or manmade (such as a birdbath or fountain).   We will be setting up a variety of "mini-habitats" which will be visible from residents' rooms.  Each setting will have a bird bath and a variety of feeders to attract different types of birds.  We will also be establishing a bluebird trail across the back of the property.

Habitat and Wildlife Keepers (HAWK) will be creating the wildlife habitat, in concert with our planned landscaping.  All feeders have been donated by Wild Birds Unlimited at the Galleria.

If you would like to contribute an element of the project in honor of a family member, contact Debbie Foster at 704-841-1372 or fostdebbie@gmail.com  We will need bird baths, poles and predator baffles.  We would like our habitat to have a uniform appearance, so we will be using identical items.

Edward Carlton McWhorter House completed

Hospice of Union County is proud to announce the completion of the Edward Carlton McWhorter House, the third hospice house to be located on their main campus in Monroe, NC.  Not only does the facility provide an additional six beds of residential care, it also has the first six beds of general in-patient care for hospice patients in Union County.   Adding to the fourteen beds already available on campus, the new facility has both patient and family spaces, including two sunrooms, a family dining room and a family room with a play area for children – with fireplaces in the two family areas.

Patient rooms include a private patio entrance for each patient, as well as a family area that includes a fold-out couch for times when a family member would like to stay the night.  The campus is continuing to be updated, with Houses I and II being refurnished as soon as it is possible to do so with minimum disturbance for the patients already there.  There is also a project underway to qualify the campus itself as a Nationally Certified Wildlife Habitat, primarily focusing on birds and butterflies.  While the campus already includes a fish pond and bird feeders outside each patient window, the addition of further water features and safe nesting opportunities will help to achieve an ever more peaceful location for the patients and their families.

Holiday Auction a Great Success!

Hospice of Union County held its’ Annual Holiday Auction on Saturday, November 7 at First Baptist Church in Monroe.  The Annual Holiday Auction is a long-standing tradition for Union County shoppers, who use the auction’s amazing selection of baskets and individual items to get an early-start on their Christmas shopping.

The auction grossed approximately $25,000, which is an average year for the auction – something that Wayne Berg, Resource Development Director for Hospice of Union County considers a real win.  “For us to have an average year, receipt-wise, at a time of such economic pressure is a real testimony to the loyal support that we receive from our community.”  Because that money goes towards patient care, patients who cannot afford to pay for their own end-of-life care can receive a peaceful, comfortable passing.  The cost of room and board for the Hospice Houses is $155/day – assuming an average of a one-week stay, that will cover room and board for over 20 patients.  Just from a good day of bargain hunting!  Mike Linker, Executive Director for Hospice of Union County, pointed out that the range of items is a real key to the annual response to the auction, “Every year, we seem to have a greater range of items donated – things you would never think of directly asking for – but they have great appeal.  We’re very grateful, not just for the support of the buyers, but the support of the donors, as well.”

If you have any questions about the auction, please call 704-292-2100 or visit their website at www.houc.org.
